When Planning A Garage Sale Use Imagination

By Ina Hunt

As things pile up around the house, in the garage or storage shed, it might be time to get rid of them. Many of these things are not being used and someone may find them interesting or just exactly what they need for their collection of stuff. The idea of a yard or garage sale can help you clear some of this material out and you can learn so much by planning a garage sale for the next nice weekend.

The planning that goes into a garage sale is the same as would go into any small, temporary business. You are offering stuff for purchase and you want to make it easy to browse. Whether it is actually set inside the garage, completely, or fans outside to the yard or driveway, it must be organized.

Cleaning the garage up is a minimum. Lights, to ensure it is not dark and foreboding as well as to make it easy to see all of the good stuff you have for sale, is also appropriate. Tables and display cases as needed can be placed around the space and outside to make room for people to move in and around everything.

One of the things that make people uncomfortable when looking at garage sale items is dirty things. The clothes should be cleaned and dry. Anything that normally hangs should be hung up. A rope, strung through a pipe or around a wood handle, will accomplish this. When there is dirt on things people have a tendency to move down the block to the next display.

Any tools you display should probably be hanging on the walls or placed on the tables. This is a garage, after all, and they should look normal here. This makes it all look like you are using them for a project and people will assume they are some of your best, favorite things. Rusty things that still work fine can be placed in a box or a plastic tub so people will think they have found a unique thing you may have over looked.

Some additional attention should be paid to customer service. Ensure there are plenty of electrical outlets to allow the clients to plug things in and try them out. Most people do not mind buying electrical items, however, they do want to know they are buying something that works. This helps you cement a few extra sales simply by having this available even if you have to run a few extension cords out into the center.

Having a cash box with a lock is something that is very important. A pad of paper is also nice to have as well as a couple of pens or pencils. The number of people that usually show up are an interesting group in and of themselves. Watch for the professionals that arrive, usually, first thing in the morning, often before you actually open for business.

Getting organized, within your home, begins with having the proper places to locate the things you wish to have around you. Getting rid of things and making a few dollars while doing it, is something to consider. A rental unit for these items is costly and, you must agree, these items probably will not ever be looked at or used again.
