Worker Hair Cuts: Do You Have The Legal Right To Alter Them?

By George Dodson

In this society that we have today, laws as well as regulations with regard to labor is clearly defined and each worker is obliged to know their rights for their own protection. Gone are the days when the management could come up with draconian rules and regulations and expect the workers to toe the line for the fear of losing their jobs and their means of livelihood as well. Consequently, companies or employers today can not just implement any law or regulation at work without the consent of the labor unions as well as the approval of the government in order to safeguard the employees.

Among those that have been an issue in the work office or work place is the dress and the haircut. So before any company or their management decides to regulate the appearance of their employees they must introspect whether they within their legal limits and not infringing upon the basic rights of their employees who also happen to be the citizen of their country.

However some of the organizations or companies have it specifically mentioned in their contract form that their employees are to keep the length of their hair to a permissible limit as mentioned by the organization or company hiring them. A prime example of a work that requires a short hairstyle or hair cut among both sexes is in the defense force or in the army, navy and such because having a long hair can only block ones' eyesight. In addition, there are also a few rules in the defense forces which require their soldiers to have a lesser amount of facial hair at work.

There are also instances where a haircut or hairstyle requirement many not be significant such as in religious customs. An example of this is for the Indian Sikhs where their defense forces are allowed to have lengthy hairs as part of their specific religious custom.

The aviation industry also requires its labor force to have a short and decent hair cut to fully carry out their jobs and also to have a neat look to entice customers and clients. There are also a lot of show businesses today that have a uniform style of hair cut among its labor forces to suit the theme of their business. It is in these classifications of businesses and careers that one is required to have a shorter hair to be fully efficient at work. Also recently some the companies are making it a part of their policy to ask their employees to cut their down their hair and keep it short since uniform length of the hair of all the employees will result in lower expenses for the company in maintaining it with hair blow drier of a single size for all the employees. Although it may seem that all jobs require a specific haircut there are still those that do not require such rule since it can already go against an employees' rights.
