Prepping Includes Learning About Propane Prices, Propane Tank Prices

By Cath Buhr

Whether you are a dedicated prepper or just someone who sees the value of preparing for any type of natural disaster or manmade calamity, propane can be an excellent source of fuel to consider using. While you might be worried about the propane tank prices as well as propane prices in general, there are plenty of ways to keep your costs down.

Propane is a wonderful possibility for those wishing to lessen their dependence on society or the grid in general and propane is even a green fuel, so it's safe for the environment. Solar power is also a fuel option, but you do have to purchase batteries to store up the solar energy, so keep that in mind while researching alternative fuels. Still, both options are superior to natural gas or electricity from the grid because they are safer and you can stockpile the fuel. In addition, if the grid is compromised, you will still have the sun and, hopefully, a large supply of propane on hand.

You might be worried about the cost of propane tanks for sale, and they do range in cost based on size and condition. New tanks obviously cost several hundred dollars more than a refurbished tank, so looking at used propane tank prices can be a smart idea. If you wish to stockpile, you probably won't be as interested in a 100-gallon propane tank as you would be in 500-gallon propane tanks or even 1,000-gallon tanks. If you have room on your property for multiple tanks, this also can be a good option. Also, ask your propane company if they are able to bury your propane tank, which is sometimes an option.

As a prepper, you might want to store as much propane as possible, and this can be wise for several reasons. Many preppers or other off-the-grid enthusiasts live in more rural areas. A larger propane tank, such as a 1,000-gallon propane tank or 500-gallon propane tank, will need to be filled less often. If you fill the tank prior to the start of winter, you won't have to worry about refills when roads might be blocked due to storms or when there are propane shortages.

You probably have noticed that fuel costs, in general, tend to be higher in the winter months, and this is a truth you'll discover about propane prices, as well. The best time to buy your propane is when the propane prices and the demand are low. This often occurs during July and August and can be an optimum time to buy. After all, if you can buy when propane prices drop, you can afford to buy more propane, which helps you build up your supply.

Aside from buying when propane prices are low and shopping around for a good deal on propane tank prices, the type of propane you buy also matters. When you interview propane delivery companies, ask if they sell HD-5 propane or HD-10 propane. HD-5 propane is the type that you really want to purchase because it is a purer type of propane and simply burns more efficiently. Also, some companies will alert customers when propane prices go down or are about to go up, so make sure you are on the company email list.
