ADHD In Children Can Be Managed Successfully

In the past, youngsters that struggled to learn was simply seen as dumb and those that displayed unruly behaviour were simply described as naughty. Such kids were often punished and many were shunned by teachers and peers alike. Very often, the parents of such children did not know what to do. Today, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a recognized medical condition. ADHD in children from Dallas to Singapore can be treated and sufferers can lead normal lives.

ADD, as this condition is also known, causes a wide variety of symptoms. Many youngsters with this condition cannot concentrate for any length of time and they struggle to assimilate new knowledge. Many patients display symptoms of depression. Others exhibit anti social behaviour and often act in an aggressive manner. Incessant talking is also a very common symptom. In extreme cases the child will regress into destructive fits of anger.

Many people think that modern drugs such as Ritalin is the ideal solution for kids suffering from ADD. It is true that such drugs can help to control many of the symptoms but it is important to know that not all the symptoms van be treated or controlled with drugs. In fact, some kids are intolerant to these drugs because the side effects are simply too severe.

Almost all integrated treatment plans for youngsters with ADD include some form of regular exercise. Exercise raises the levels of dopamine and serotonin in the brain. This not only immediately improve the mood of the patient but it also helps to improve his ability to concentrate for longer periods. ADD patients should exercise for at least half an hour each day, preferably out of doors.

Most ADD sufferers experience difficulties in sleeping. They struggle to fall asleep and they do not want to get up in the morning. Parents need to make sure that their kids become used to a strict sleeping regime, going to bed and getting up at set times. The room should be as dark as possible and all forms of noise should be eliminated.

Particular attention should also be paid to the diets of youngsters with ADD. They preferably need to eat six smaller meals per day and each meal should contain both protein and omega fatty acids. Foods such as fresh vegetables and fruit as well as fish are ideal. ADD patients often fail to eat for a while and then eat everything in sight, often the very foodstuffs that will aggravate their symptoms.

Many kids benefit greatly from some form of psychological treatment. An experienced therapist can help them to manage their symptoms, to control their behaviour and to understand the condition that they suffer from. Practising yoga or meditation has also proved to be extremely beneficial. It helps the child to relax, to focus and to concentrate.

Parents and teachers should be on the lookout for signs that a child may be suffering from ADD. The earlier the condition is diagnosed the easier it will be to implement an integrated management plan. There is no reason why sufferers cannot lead full and productive lives.
