By Martha Ellis

For decades now, people have been preparing beer locally. The importance of this beer is that it does not contain the harmful chemicals which are used to manufacture the commercial ones. Here you regulate the contents of your brew. In this article, we discuss the major home brew ingredients for beer.

The common components are the malted grains. They can also be called malts. Different types of cereals can be used in the preparation of beer. However, barley is commonly used because it has a lot of sugar content. Besides, its natural hulls make working with it easy.

Other grains which can be mixed with barley include corns, rice, and wheat. They are added in small quantities to add a particular taste or property to the beer; these are the starch contents that add energy to the drink and brings out there distinctive flavours.

The process of preparing grain malts involves letting allowing them to partially sprout then heating them at very high temperatures to stop the germination process. Starch is then released from the grains and converted to sugar which later is used by yeast as food.

Water is a crucial in making beer. This is entire beer usually water. There is no first water to be used in this process. Any water which is safe for consumption can be employed. However, it should be noted that that beer made from hard water has a different taste from the one made from soft water. But this is a small issue because it has little effects on the quality of beer.

Hops are favorite flowers which most people like to use. Their green buds give a counterbalance of bitterness and sweetness of the beer. Besides, they give the beer interesting flavors and aromas. Their significant contribution is that they enable the beer to remain fresh for a long time. Apart from hops, other ingredients which can be used include; spices and herbs.

Hops flowers are composed of two substances; resins and oils. The role of resins is to provide the bitter taste while oils provide sweet smell and taste. Different hops varieties have got a varying amount of resins thus varying the degree of bitterness.

Last but not least, we have yeast. These are small living organisms which convert the sugary malts into a real beer. They consume sugar from the grains to produce carbon dioxide. Once everything has been consumed, they slowly drift into a snoozy condition of hibernation. At this point the beer is ready.

Two types of yeast exist. They are the ale yeast and lager yeast. Ale type can be used at different places with varying temperatures. For this reason, it is suitable to be used at home by then local brewers. Lager type, on the other hand, works only at specific temperatures; cool temperatures.

Yeast is available as liquid yeast or dry yeast. The dry ones are usually in foil pouches and resemble the powdered yeast used for bread baking. An unopened packet of these dry yeast can last for many months when kept in a drawer or even years when kept in a refrigerator. Liquid yeast has poor keeping quality thus goes bad very quickly even when kept in a refrigerator.
