Best Way To Take Advantage Of Record Player Needles

By Deborah Hill

Record players are apparatus used to reproduce sounds from phonograph vinyls which spins with the help of the turntable in a constant speed. A stylus or needle runs along the grooves on the vinyl and the vibrations it picks up is reproduced into sounds. The process of involves converting the vibrations into electric currents then amplified for loudspeakers to output the reproduced sound.

These parts of your apparatus need regular changing because constantly using them will wear them out. It is specially true with record player needles because of the friction created when it runs along vinyl grooves. Here are a few information about them and how to best take care of this and other parts for a quality sound to be produced.

Setting the player up requires you to have an amplifier and a speaker but there are speakers now that has an amplifier built inside them already so you can just use them instead. Position the speakers on the correct side indicated with enough space between them and the wall. If you placed them on a hard surface, sit them on a piece of foam so that the vibrations can be absorbed.

Buying second hand vinyl records are better due to them being cheaper compared to brand new specially those in vintage markets, garage sales and charity shops. Clean thoroughly your records for the greatest sounding music to be possible when being played. Cleaning machines are available but cheaper alternatives are also available.

When not using the player, the dust cover must be down in keeping it clean. Though when it is being used, you have the option to keep it down or take it off and would depend on your preference. The sound may resonate with the dust cover when it is down so there are differences in sound quality compared to when taken off.

The platter mat is a material shaped like a disc that sits between the vinyl and player usually made of felt. It absorbs vibrations and steadily holds the record to improve sound quality. Felt is the most common material because it is the one usually included but cork and rubber tend to reduce vibrations better and cause less static.

The cartridge houses the needle and is replaceable because dust and debris can wear the needle down. If playing records regularly, annually changing the cartridge is advisable to keep its excellence in producing sounds. You may also consider upgrading for further improvements rather than just doing regular replacing.

The tracking force is the weight the cartridge has set on the vinyl which could be changed by the counterweight at the end of tonearm being turned. Guidelines are available online or included in the product with suggested tracking force of the cartridge. Too heavy weight would make the music dull while too light would make it thin.

Make sure enough space is available in your place for your record player because they are bulky most of the time. Placing them somewhere that does not produce vibrations is important. If not, then the vibration will make the needle to skip and jump when being played.
