Things To Know About Spring Turkey Hunting

By John Bell

Turkeys are large birds native to the Americas and is a common food during Thanksgiving celebration. The male ones have beards that helps differentiate them with the female ones although some hens have them as well. Male birds are called gobblers because of the gobbling sound they make which the hens cannot do.

Going on a hunt for them is enjoyable and tricky because of the excellent visions they have which helps them detect approaching danger and run from it. You could try this enjoyable experience by going to spring turkey hunting Texas and catch one for yourself. Here are some things to know about when hunting turkeys.

Search a suitable place to hunt for them and these are located in either a public or private land. The population of the birds in the state is very large but most of the areas available for hunting them are private. You can access these lands by paying a fee to the owner and having the advantage of doing the hunt without a lot of competition.

Determine when is the best time to hunt for turkeys so you could prepare for this activity. Spring is the best season to do it because this is their breeding season as well. Gobblers are the only legal ones you should kill so that hens can breed and lay eggs during this season and you can locate these gobblers easily as they make a sound to attract the females to them.

Doing some scouting before the start of the season is a good way of knowing where a lot of gobblers are located. The indications they leave are plenty helping you know where they have been and examples of these are foot prints and scratch marks made when food searching. Finding the place they roost can be used to your advantage so you could prepare near it and catch one in the morning easily.

Calling sounds are used to attract birds and making them respond to the sound in pinpointing their location. These are useful for finding one that went out of sight or your first one for the day. They are attracted to these sounds because they are thinking that a flock mate is calling out for them making them call back as a response.

There are many different kinds of call sounds and the most common of them is the one imitating the sound of hens. These are produced in different ways using different devices such as box, slate and diaphragm calls. Learn which one of these you would be using depending on which sound you want to have.

Wearing full camouflage during hunting is important as turkeys have excellent visions and can spot things easily. Your whole body must be covered in camouflage including your face with the use of facial paint or wearing mask. Wearing vest is also a must so you can store all the items and gears you have in the many pockets it has.

A good set up for hunting is important to distract and have them stay in place. Turkeys leave immediately after sensing danger so decoys are a way of distracting them. There are more set ups available but be sure to have patience while hunting.
