They say that travel broadens the mind, but it's hard to expand your horizons when you're dealing with anxiety about flying. Before you take that next vacation, save yourself the headache with the tips in this article about flight comfort. Hopefully they'll help make your next flight go more smoothly.

Travel light. If you only take a couple of carry-on bags instead of luggage, you will save yourself a lot of time and money. Also not to mention the frustrations of getting your bags claimed and checked, and trying to find it at the luggage carousel. They might even get lost or stolen.

Sometimes long flights can cause you to sit and sit and sit. Don't be afraid to get up and walk down the aisles every once in a while. Exercise is great for you and when the plane reaches its' destination, you won't feel so lousy and you will avoid the stiff feeling in your legs.

You should always bring something that will keep you occupied on a flight. A simple entertainer is a pen and paper. You can play games, write poems, draw little sketches, anything you can imagine. This will keep your mind focused so you are not concerned about how much longer the flight will be.

If you are going to be traveling on an airplane, purchase some antibiotic ointment and cotton swabs. Before you leave to catch your flight, put a generous amount of the ointment on the inside of your nose. It keeps out the germs and helps prevent you from getting sick. It also keeps your nose from drying out.

When traveling by plane, make sure to wear shoes that are easy to remove. You will be required to remove your shoes to go through security, so wearing slip-on or Velcro shoes will allow you to remove them quickly. Once they come out of the scanner, you will be able to quickly replace them and be on your way.

When traveling by air, move the in-flight magazine and the SkyMall catalog from the seat pocket in front of you to the overhead compartment. Although it won't free up a lot of space, every little bit counts. This simple adjustment can add some legroom to your journey and help you be more comfortable on your flight.

Use noise-cancelling headphones. Because of all the engine and background noise on an airplane, you have to crank the volume on your headphones up dangerously high just to hear the music. Invest in a pair of noise-cancelling headphones, which cancel out the background noise and let you clearly hear your music at a reasonable volume. Even if you don't listen to music, they are great for just reducing the noise.

You already know you can't take drinks with you through security at the airport. But you can definitely take a water bottle as long as it's empty. Save yourself the two dollars on water you're going to buy immediately after you get through security - just bring an empty water bottle from home and fill up with icy-fresh fountain water once you're through.

Get a jump on ridding yourself of jet lag. Plan activities that will have you outdoors for your first couple of days while abroad. When you are outside being active the exercise, fresh air and plenty of sunlight (if available) will do wonders for defeating the lethargy of jet lag. Taking a quick power nap upon arrival to the hotel can help as well.
