California is an open state. This means that records of marriage in California are considered as public documents. Residents of California then have the freedom to access the files anytime that they need the marriage certificate.

Conducting a research or update on the family tree is one of the primary use of a marriage record. The information found on a marriage certificate is one of the important things needed in order to update the family tree. Government transactions would also call for a copy of a marriage certificate. Such document is used as proof of one's status which is necessary in transactions such as insurance and update on the government records. The marriage records are also one of the documents used when checking the marital status of an individual. This is usually done by those who are in the dating stage. They do this to make sure that their partners are really single as they have claimed.

As the name suggest, marriage certificates would contain the basic details of the marriage. One would know the complete names of the bride and the groom. The maiden name of the bride is also indicated on the record. The date and the place where the marriage occurred are also on the public document along with the names of the couple's parents. Additional information includes the names of the witnesses of the marriage.

Getting a copy of a marriage record can be done at the office of the Department of Health under the Vital Records Section of California. The state office can only release copies of documents which have been registered since 1905 except for marriages that took place from 1987 to 1995. Such records are only available at the office of the county clerk where the marriage has been registered. One would have to pay $14 per request of it was made at the state office. The cost for a county request would vary.

Aside from the processing fee, one has to submit a request form filled with the basic information of the file that is being obtained. The information provides will be used to conduct the search. Also, the personal details of the one who requested the document have to be indicated on the form as well. It will be used to verify one's identity since the state of California releases the documents only to the bride or the groom whose names are on the file as well as their immediate families. One would need to have a special permission to access the file of other people. Sending a mail request to the state office is also possible as long as all the requirements are included on the request which includes the payment. This method is not recommended for those who need the document right away since the results can be delivered only after a few days.

Marriage license records can be obtained faster without waiting for days or hours. This can be done through the Internet. One just need to long on to a website that offers such service and fill out the online form with the necessary information required and the results of the search are then displayed in just seconds. This allows a fast retrieval without the hassle of going to any office. There are even websites that offer a free search.
