Take An Online Prevention Of Medical Errors Course

By Imelda Reid

When a report was published in the 1990s by the Institute of Medicine in the United States, it became obvious just how many patients were dying as a result of ignorance regarding proper safety precautions. It was shocking to discover that more patients were dying from a failure in this regard than from motor vehicle accidents or cancer. As a result of this report, there has been a focus on patient safety by the medical profession. Practitioners are able to continue their education online by taking a prevention of medical errors course.

Many of these providers offer their courses online and it is sometimes difficult to decide between all of those on offer. When making a decision it is important to find out whether the provider is approved by the appropriate medical authorities. The courses should contain certain content and an experienced, approved provider will know exactly what this content should be.

The individual taking such a course will be taught how to identify problem situations, determine factors that increase risks as well as learn strategies to decrease these risks. Other elements included in such courses are identification of vulnerable populations and root causes of error are analyzed. The reporting requirements may also be covered.

Events that should never occur are those like air embolisms, leaving a foreign object in a patient after surgery, catheter-related urinary tract infections and blood incompatibilities. An error that should never occur but still does is wrong surgery on a patient or surgery on the wrong patient. Another aspect that should be cover in such courses is that of misdiagnosis. There are five conditions that are often misdiagnosed and therefore wrongly handled. Cancer related issues; cardiac related issues, neurological related issues, urological related post-operative issues and swift response to surgery complications fall into this category.

Most of the online courses take two hours to complete and the level of instruction is simple and concise. Such courses make continued education more convenient. It is a simple matter of the individual going online, registering and taking the course in their own time and from a location they choose.

These courses can be taken by all kinds of medical practitioners. They vary in price and some are even offered for free once one has joined a certain organization. Some websites offer courses suited to the requirements and regulations of a particular state. Some states have very specific legislation about this issue.

An official tracking system is used in the United States to keep abreast of the continuing education courses done by practitioners. Some states require a two hour course to be completed in order to obtain or renew a license. A recognized provider will submit the credits for courses to this tracking system, making it easy to receive or renew a license when necessary.

Every practitioner, no matter how experienced, can benefit from the material provided. There are still far too many patients dying unnecessarily due to human error. Every practitioner has a responsibility to make sure that a patient does not die due to an unnecessary error. Courses like this help to promote patient safety and hopefully with enough practitioners focusing on this, the statistics of unnecessary patient death will improve over time.
