Whistleblowers & Their Rights, With Joseph Piacentile

By Bob Oliver

It goes without saying, but there exist several rights which serve to help whistleblowers. Joseph Piacentile understands that these men and women require help in order to protect them from unwarranted backlash, either professionally otherwise. The specifics of this, though, may be hazy. For this reason, I would like to go over a few of the most basic rights which are designed to help those who direct attention to cases of fraud.

One of the rights to consider - and Joseph Piacentile can say the same on the matter - has to do with employment. Many individuals may be hesitant to become whistleblowers due to the idea that they can be let go from their jobs. For example, if a nurse witnesses some type of fraud occurring in the healthcare industry, he or she wants to make sure that their profession is protected. It is fortunate, then, that rights exist in this scenario.

You should know that dismissal is just one of many responses which are protected by the rights of whistleblowers. I think that it's important to discuss the likes of unfair demotion and overall harassment as well, since these are just a couple of the many instances frowned upon in the workplace. What happens when a whistleblower is unjustly targeted, you may wonder? This is where discussion about protective measures should be had.

If you find that you have been treated unfairly due to your work as a whistleblower, you can lodge a formal complaint with The Occupational Safety and Health Administration. This organization has protected these individuals for years, and the fact that they are quick to work is one that the likes of Joe Piacentile can recognize as well. OSHA understands that there is legitimate fear when it comes to employment. It's their job to ensure that everyone receives appropriate attention and service.

Without question, whistleblowers have their rights and it's important for them to learn about them as early as possible. After all, they should have a general understanding of what they're allowed to do, and how to go about correcting any unjust action that has been brought onto them. Fraud is a serious matter, to say the least, and it's important for people to become aware of it. For those who are able to do so, take comfort in the fact that you are protected.
