Get Better Shower Stream Pressure

By John Lewis

Low water stream pressure is a common issue. Many may not realize why the water output has decreased. If the shower stream has become slack the following may help get the pressure back to where it used to be.

Water trickling out of the shower head can be caused by various things. You may want to phone your local water works. They have people who can come out and troubleshoot the issue and offer solutions. The most important step when experiencing low flow is to find out the reason for the restriction. The issue could be in any of the following areas.

The shower extension - if the main water outputs are working as they should then the cause could be in the extension piece. There are several possible reasons this may happen. If the extension is new, then the restrictor valve inside the extension may be sized too small. If you haven't recently changed this piece, then there could be build up which is causing blockages.

If it was recently installed, then the membrane may be too small thus resulting in a trickle of water. To solve, you'd need to widen the hole located inside the shower head. If it's been installed for a while, you simply may need to clean it. You can do this by soaking in vinegar or scrubbing. Once performed proper flow should be restored.

The Pipes- Low pressure can also be a result of old pipes or incorrect pipe size. Over time, steel pipes can galvanize over time. When this happens, deposits can build up inside the pipes and result in low pressure. If the pipes are new, then the wrong size pipes may have been installed. This would result in water flow being restricted too much and reduce output.

The fix- To remedy reduced pressure in galvanized pipes it is necessary that the pipes be replaced. It is recommended to upgrade steel pipes for copper or plastic. Once done, you should notice an increase in the flow. If the pipes are the incorrect size, then you would need to pay a professional to replace them with the appropriate sizes.

If neither of the above turns out to be the issue, then you should check your current setup. Most homes have a valve on the supply line, this is used to control the water pressure inside the house. The valve may need adjusting. To adjust this valve, you'd loosen the lock nut, turn the adjustment screw. You would need to turn it clockwise to increase and counter clockwise to decrease pressure. Once proper stream is achieved, re-tighten the nut.

Having appropriate water pressure makes showering faster and may reduce stress. Only do the above if you are capable of doing it yourself. Otherwise, it is recommended that you call a professional to help. For recommendations you can ask family and friends about plumbers they've used. Once called, they'll come to your house, troubleshoot, and apply the solution. To get the best rate, you may want to phone several plumbers for quotes.
