DMV Registration Basic Information And Helpful Tips

By Frank Howard

Every owned or leased vehicle in the state needs titling and registration that is performed at Department of Vehicles in that state. The agency manages all related tasks to automobiles at their place and their forms are available online which must be completed and printed before their office is visited. Insurance coverage verification needs its ID card.

Other requirements the registration agent needs to see are proof of ownership, driver license and photo ID to prove your identity. Safety and emissions inspection before DMV registration NY is not needed but do this within ten days since applying. The results are submitted electronically so going back to their office is unnecessary for the applicants.

When registering this time is your first then bring all required documents with the completed application though they recommend online reservation. Auto dealers can do the titling, issuing of plates and registration for you for an added fee. If they have not done this then you can do this yourself by bringing all required things including the payment.

Fees vary depending upon your address and vehicle weight including other fees like sales tax which you could calculate using their online estimator. Money orders, cash, personal checks and most credit cards are accepted by them and splitting using cash and checks is possible. Registration services are identical for used or new cars.

New residents must register any automobile they have brought with them within thirty days but their previous registration in another state is valid still during this period. When the title from that other place was not named under you then provide the bill of sale to show transfer of ownership. If there is a lien then show your certificate with your name on it and lienholder letter saying your plans of registering is known to them.

When buying cars, get the title from their seller because you will be unable to acquire a regular one with your name on it without it. Their absence would make you unaware of their brand or designation that can devalue it for some thousand dollars. And if their loan was not paid off still, the lienholder probably has the title and would only release it when fully paid.

Inform any changes of your address to DMV within thirty days after moving to the new place in order to receive from them notifications, reminders and notices still. Keep their license plates during their sale as they were assigned on you and officers would not think you owned that vehicle still. You could use them instead in your new ones rather than purchasing another.

List the real price in selling them on all documents as putting a false one is considered a crime which the government would know when checking fair value market to compare them. Anything falsely written on documents are considered to be a criminal act. Consequences included for this are fines and imprisonment.

Provide authorization letter when you let somebody else sign the documents for you. They will not issue the title unless there is an authorizing document. Ensure every document have proper signs before submitting them.
