Important Points To Consider When Hog Hunting

By Roger Campbell

People are compelled to indulge in hunting because it is a satisfying sport, besides the fact that a successful kill provides enough meat. Hogs are misunderstood creatures. Their intelligence level cannot be ignored. Hog Hunting is an exercise that ought to be guided by informed decisions, and if one is unaware, the animal may pose a danger, especially when defending their offspring or when the situation jeopardizes its life.

People who indulge in hunting activities can belong to one of the following classes of hunters; trophy hunter, opportunistic, and meat hunter. There are different kinds of hogs, and the sort you are after will dictate the means which you opt to use. Trophy hunters are motivated to get the biggest tusker in the wild. The opportunistic only shoots when a hog happens to enter their radius of sight. Meat hunters do hunt to stoke their refrigerators with meat.

Going out hunting without the slightest knowledge of the hunt is very dangerous. You ought to be equipped with your facts about the animal. One thing you have to always have at the back of your mind is that the animal is very smart. In fact, hogs have the same cognitive values like a chimp. When under pressure, they move or turn into nocturnal creatures.

Hogs are continuously moving, and having such information aids one to be alert while hunting. No matter whether they are waiting beside a feeder, or actually feeding, the animal is always moving. Hogs tend to be in groups, making loud grunts. Since they are always moving, they never leave you enough chance to get a clear shot. Therefore, whenever the opportunity presents itself, be sure to shoot.

A hog or boar lack good vision, but that does not necessarily mean that they are damn. In fact, sight deficiency has presented the animal with a keen sense of smell. That is why most successful hunters tribute their kills to the spot and stalk technique. Usually, if the wind direction favors them, they will pick up your scent and subsequently, find a safe haven.

Be on the lookout for good weather. Doing so plays to your advantage. Hogs lack sweat glands, and therefore lack the internal metabolism to maintain coolness. To the initiated hunter, hot weather means that hogs cannot run for long due to the high temperatures the body generates. During hot water, you may find them near water holes in areas dense with thick vegetation. Their movement is limited to the night or evening when the temperatures are cool.

However, there are a lot of misconceptions regarding the animal. Harboring such misguided notions render your hunting a dangerous endeavor. One of these false statements is that you need to be equipped with a high caliber gun to have the job done. What most people do not know is that such caliber weapons ruin the meat. Majorly, this notion is nourished by the fact that the animal has a very thick skin.

Others are led to understand that if there is no blood trail, then there is hardly kill. That is not true. Deer tend to leave a trail of blood after a shot. On the contrary, a hog does not leave a trail immediately afterward, because it requires a lot of force to push blood through their thick, fatty skins.
